Indian Fry Bread
Indian Fry Bread (also known as Squaw Bread). I would like to thank a very dear friend and neighbor, Nita Collie, for this recipe. She brought over a bowl of chile and some "Squaw Bread" for Carol and I to try, and I just loved it. We gobbled it up so quickly, that we didn't have a chance to eat it in the proper tradition (see below).
Ingredients:
2 cups flour
2 heaping teaspoons Baking Powder
1 heaping teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1-1/4 cups milk
Sift dry ingredients. Add milk and roll out dough as for dough nuts.
You want the finished dough to be soft, not stiff. Cut in 2" squares
with a slit in the middle. I use a small spatula to cut dough. Drop
into about an inch and a half of hot, hot, oil. Fry until light brown;
drain on paper towels. Serve hot with butter and honey. I made a batch (the very day I posted this), but chose to dust them with powdered sugar ... mmmmm, good!
