The Grandkids - They say the darndest things.
What grandparent doesn't have some pictures of the grandkids ... click here.
Well my Dad was a grandfather at an earlier age than me, but at the age of 43 I instantaneously acquired three grandchildren when our daughter Jenna married Robert Detherow. There were three children in the mix from a previous marriage for Robert: Jack, Nick and Rachel.
I remember the first time that I took Nick and Rachel for a ride in my pickup heading to the grocery store. Nick was only four years old and he waves his little finger towards me.
"What should I do with this, Grandpa?", he asked so innocently.
I was driving, mind you, so I had to pay close attention to that, so I asked, "What is it?"
"It was in my nose", he stated so emphatically, "Should I put it back?"
I was very appreciative of the fact that my pickup had the old fashioned type of floor mats that I could easily take a garden hose and wash out the inside of my pickup ... "Wipe it on the floor".
My granddaughter, Addisen, went to the bank with me, so I could make a deposit. Addisen was, at the time about 2-1/2 years old. While in line, waiting for the first available teller, the woman just ahead of us in line, starts of a conversation with Addisen, with the usual things that a person would ask a child: age, name, etc.
But Addisen, for some reason thought it necessary to say to the woman, "Smell my Grandpa".
The woman asked, "What?" Then I chimed in with an explanation, " When we got out of my pickup, she said that I smelled really good. I told her that I just finished shaving and put on after shave, so that was what she was smelling ..."
"Yeah", said Addisen, "Smell him".
The woman, accomodating Addisen's request, leans toward the side of my neck to take a whiff, and then says, "Oh, yes, he does smell nice".
"See, I told you", Addisen replied.
